A friend of mine installed some copy of something and now his computer says
"hey your computer case is open" as soon as he tries to boot up and has to
hit spacebar for the computer to continue to boot.

Any ideas what this is or how to fix?

Thanks,
Rich

Hitting the space bar is a odd way to close the computer case :)

Any ideas what "some copy of something" is? Or what antivirus scanners
that detect joke programs say?

Although there is not enough info to tell if this is practical joke or not,
it may be worth checking if there is an AutoExec.Bat file with lines
something like:

Echo.
Echo hey your computer is open
Pause

That could explain it... though as I said above, you have not given us
enough info to chew over or come up with anything conclusive...

Frequently PC manufactures install a switch that will indicate to the BIOS
that the case of a PC has been opened. One can simple reset this state from
the BIOS (usually a keystroke prior to boot will allow you to enter your
BIOS. I believe this is more for the corporate environment than a home PC.
