computer turns on but wont starts up

any help please?? my computer ( a k7vta-pro; with a atlhon xp +2400
working at xp +1800; 1 gb ram - 1 512 mb, and 2 256 mb mixed brands; a
80 gb; and a gforce2 5200 video card) turns on, but sometimes (almost
all the times) doesnt start, and the power button stops responding,
tried to take it apart and put it together again, clean all contacts
with a eraser, still doesnt figure it out...any light here? already
cleared the cmos a dozen times...really getting pissed...tnks

Check that the start up button isn't fouling the front panel and
staying in the ON position. To test the theory, find the pins on the
mobo that it connects to and momentariy short the two to see if it
starts up reliably - don't worry, its low voltage, no risk to you.
 
no, work just like with the button...didnt start, but after a few
resets turn on...
does a dead cmos battery could cause this?

Unlikely, they last for 5 years or more. If it is dead, you should
see error messages eg invalid BIOS settings when it does start up.

The battery voltage should be more than 2.5v

Have you tried a known-good replacement PSU?
