I have been using my computer with windows XP and have
recently been having the computer randomly power down and
turn off. This normally happens when I am typing,
generaly right in the middle of a sentence. I have mc
affee virus scan updated and have checked the whole
computer, I have all the critical xp updates. I have
also told the computer to never power down and
hibernation is turned off. I am not sure what is causing
the problem, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi, Jon.

It could be a hardware problem (loose connections, bad RAM, failing power
supply, heat buildup).

If it is a software problem, you can change the default settings for what
WinXP should do in case of System Failure. Go to System Properties |
Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings. Under System failure, remove the
check from Automatically restart.

Next time, instead of rebooting, your computer should halt with a BSOD (Blue
Screen of Death) full of cryptic codes. You'll still have to reboot, using
the Restart key, but you'll have all the time you need to study that screen.
If it doesn't make sense to you, copy it verbatim into your next post and
some guru here (not me!) should be able to interpret the codes and point you
in the right direction.
