Computer turning off by itself

I've been having a problem lately, well actually since the summer. A few days after I installed Windows XP I had a problem where my computer will randomly cut itself off. I know it's not virus related, so now I honestly have no clue why my laptop keeps doing this. It's totally random, some days it runs just fine, other days it acts crazy and constantly cuts itself off. Sometimes, it will run fine for a few minutes, or a few hours and then all of a sudden it cuts off. Does anybody have any insight concerning this situation?

Is there an error message associated with these shutdown episodes? It
sounds like a power supply problem. Does it do this when running on
batteries only? If it is still under warranty I would have it looked at.

Could be anything and probably unrelated to XP.

1. Heat. Check that the air pipes are clear and there is sufficient
airflow under the machine also. Fan dead?

2. Power. Battery is old/dead? Even if plugged in to mains
electricity, battery will have affect on system.

3. Computer virus not detected by your anti-virus. Check your AV is upto
date. (probably not the problem but worth mentioning).

Contact the manufacturer and/or vendor.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
