Hi

Have a look in the Event Viewer. There could be an entry that shows what
the problem may be.

Some power supplies have a thermal CB, it may be
over-heating and shutting down. With the power disconnected
it cools down and re-sets. Check voltages on your line too
to be sure the power from the street is within tolerances.

If you don't get a blue screen or warning dialog it may be a hardware
issue or over heating.

When it next happens after you re-boot go into the BIOS and look for a
page that shows the CPU/System temperatures. My P4 runs at between 30C
and 47C depending on the work the PC is doing. Did any type of
temperature monitoring utility come with the PC? If not do a Google for
'motherboard monitor' and install it. It will show you the temperature
of the CPU and system.

It may be the power supply breaking down or it may be a memory issue.

If you down-load Prime95 from <http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm> and
install it you can run a 'torture test' which will give your hardware
(including memory) a good thrashing and let you know of any problems.

It can be quite hard to pin down, have you added any new hardware to
the PC that might be over loading the power supply? Are you over
clocking the PC?

It could be overheating....
I couldnt believe how much dust I blew out of mine.

If there is no error message, look to hardware causing the shutdown.. power
supply fan not working.. cpu fan not working.. if you have added hardware,
the power supply may just not have enough to keep it all going..

No, this doesn't sound at all like virus behavior. This sounds like
something, perhaps the power supply, is over-heating. Have you ensured
that all of the computer's fans are working properly, that the
computer's air vents are free from obstruction, and that the interior of
the computer is dust-free?

thanks for the replies i will check all the answers

Mine was doing the same for a couple of days...had me stumped, but
fixed it about 4 hours ago.. I’d be sittin here happily playing my
game then bang....no power, no warning, no blue screen of death
even.....

...My AGP graphics card was a little bit loose, but because it was in
until i seriously started throwing polygons all over the screen it was
ok..

Secured the card in the AGP slot securely, and now Robert’s me
father’s brother!
