Computer suddenly powered itself up

Hi all,

I have an old desktop PC, and today it suddenly powered
itself up. Of course, after entering the password and getting into
the BIOS, I discovered that "power on LAN" was enabled,
so I disabled it.

My question is, what sort of LAN event can cause a power-up?
I assume such a feature is intended for a corporate
environment with 100s or 1000s of PCs on a network.

I see nothing else in the settings that could cause an arbitrary
power-up.

Wake on link or Magic Packet reception. There are other
cases besides a corporate environment where it could be
handy. Suppose for example your router supports the magic
packet feature, then across the internet you could cause
your router to turn on an off PC, then after waiting long
enough for it to boot, access it.

It could be that the system woke up from a lan event, more
likely the wake on link due to an intermittent connection.
Best to wait and see if disabling the power on lan feature
resolves the problem.
