Computer Stopped Working

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine moved his computer from one room to another. Before it
was moved everything was working ok. He re-connected all the leads and
switched it on but nothing happened. I looked at it and everything was
connected correctly. The Power lead is ok because there is a little
green light that flashes at the back that comes on when it is switched
on. I even jiggled the lead to see if there was a break within it, but
there wasn't. There is no noise at all like you would expect when you
switch on and the fan doesn't even start. I wonder if anyone has had a
similar problem, or better still, has a solution please.

Any ideas please.
All the Best.

Check inside for a card or connection that has been vibrated
loose during the move. Double check the mouse and keyboard
connections, they can be switched if both are PS/2 (DIN)
mini-round plugs.
Make sure the volt select switch wasn't bumped to the wrong
line voltage.
Check to see if a fan is being stopped by an obstruction.

Thanks for the reply Jim,

The best way I can explain this is that there is no "werrring" sound or
any sound when the computer is turned on, there is just nothing there.
There is just a little green light at the back that flashes. The Power
supply lead is ok.

All the Best.

Some power supplies have a rocker switch (located near where the power cord
attaches). Your friend may have accidentally turned it off.

If the PSU has power, ie the light comes on, then the
possibilities could be a disconnected power switch on the
front panel, the voltage selector switch on the PSU was
moved from 110 to 220 (or the other way), some part inside
was jostled loose during the move ( a power lead or card,
maybe even the CPU), a loose wire or other part has moved in
such a way as to jam the fan in the PSU or on the CPU.

The odds are that if the computer was working, some cable
was improperly reconnected, perhaps even damaged when it was
reconnected. You just have to check and eliminate each item
in sequence.

Open the computer case and look at and listen as you turn it
ON. Use a flashlight and get the manual out to check such
things as the mobo connections. You can use a tool to short
the start terminals on the mobo to by-pass the front panel
ON switch.

The green light shows you have mains power to the PSU ( Power Supply Unit)
only.
It does NOT mean the computer PSU is switched on. If it is switched on then
the fan for the PSU would also be ON and making a noise.
There is probably a switch at the back near the powercord to switch the PSU
on.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, information and ideas.
I will pass it on to my friend.
I will let you know how it turns out.

Once again, many thanks.
All the Best.
