Bewildered

My computer has recently decided to start up by itself. It
happens about once every day or two and I'm not sure if
it's on some schedule or not.

I have the wake-up feature disabled in the BIOS, there is
nothing in the startup folder, and I disabled scheduled
tasks and the anti-virus program. I haven't downloaded or
installed any new programs recently or made any other
intentional changes to my setup.

I have a dial-up internet connection, so it's not
connecting to the internet. When I turn on the monitor
after the phantom restart, it is at the desktop as it
would be with any other startup.

I have an Asus P4/PE motherboard and a 2.4 ghz pentium,
and my operating system is Windows XP Pro.

Check the Power Options applet in Control Panel and the documentation that
came with your computer: The "off" button may not be actually powering off
the computer.

If there is spyware on your computer, it may be able to connect to the
Internet. A good reason not to disable your antivirus program.
