Hi
Sorry posting this to 2 groups.

I have a media centre PC (Which I don't use, it was just cheap)

Had it just over a week.

Twice now the computer has turned itself on.

First time at 1.42am

Second time at 9.41 am

After the first time and a bit of searching, I have been in the bios and
turned of things to do powering up on events?

I have turned off remote assistance.

I have no scedualed events in Mcafee to run.

Please can someone point me in the direction of what can be making my
computer start all by itself.

Yes I can unplug it, then I would be real worried if it had started.

When I turn off the computer it goes through the saving your setting etc
before switching off.

This is quite un-nerving.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me

Not a big problem: You cross-posted, which is the right way to
do it.

....

There are software settings that can do that if you are using
Hibernate or Standby, but not wiht Shut Down. You weren't real
clear on how you were shutting down.

Check in Control Panel for Power Options - mouse, etc., that can
wake up the computer.

If youa r using Shut Down though, as opposed to Hibernate or
Stand by, it should NOT be coming back on. That would indicate
to me that even though you tell it to Shut Down, it's actually
Hibernating.
If so there is also usually a short message that it's
hibernating but if something is glitched, perhaps you wouldn't
get the message.

Dunno if this helped at all or not,

Look in the BIOS for settings like Wake on LAN and Wake on Modem. Turn off
any such settings you find

Thanks Pop And Ken

I did the Bios thing, nothing in there. Did find a couple of of power up
settings and dissabled.

When I turn off computer, I do Start > Turn Off > Turn Off

I did all the power options, Hibernate and all other setting about sleeping
etc.

I've had computers for many years and never come accross this before.

Searching the net, a few people have asked the same question as me with no
luck to an answer.

It's very strange,

I've now took to unplugging the damn thing so there is no way for it to
start. Sad init :)

Thnaks anyway guys.

If you do happen to come accross a solution please mail me

Hmm, interesting.

Have a look in Event Viewer; see if there's anything happening
there that might be a hint. Start, Programs, Adminstrative,
Event Viewer.

How about in your mouse settings? I just now discovered there's
a "wake up" tick in mine; it's an optical intellipoint. I don't
think this's your issue, but ...

Is the power switch possibly faulty? Is it real sensitive or
anything silly like that?

You might try disconnecting peripherals after shut down, and see
if that stops it. Mouse, tablets, printer, scanner, etc.. A
long shot again, but ...

Do the fans all turn off within a reasonable amount of time after
you shut down?

How about if you (gently) tap the box while its shut down; see if
that can make it turn on. If so, it'd be a physical problem
inside.

Hope you'll let us know if/when you get it figured out.

Hi Pop

Thanks again for the reply

I Can here your brain ticking over, Lol

It started by itself this morning again.

Been looking at Event viewer.

Nothing in there that says a program is running, just about 10 items which
are the normal starup processes.

I'll have a look at the mouse.

And I'll give the case a kick b4 bed.

I unpluged the damn thing the other day, This is getting Parinoid.

I've had computer for a long long time.

Don't say I know anything about them but can find my way around if you know
what i mean.

This is the strangest thing.

I bought this Media PC as it was cheap in the shop. I always do this. But
wish I hadn't bothered.

Most people on the net i have found point to Wake Up on Lan.

Can't find that in Bios.

And there again not found anyone that is shouting that they have found the
problem.

Also if it was a faulty connection, wouldn't I have problems while sat here
during the day? I dunno.

I#m off out tomorrow to buy an extention lean with a switch on it, Lol

I'll keep searching for resolves to this and will let you know if I do.

Oh Sorry missed one.

Yes the fans all shut off when computer shuts down.

I dunno

Thanks

Hi Pop

Just to let you know, and let you have a ponder :)

I just noticed this last night.

I have a little Netgear router, But I use the USB method. Always have

Anyway...

As you may know there is a USB light on the front of the router.

Last night when I switched the computer off, all lights on the modem where
still on.

That's the power, ISP Connection and the USB connection. MMmmmm

I didn't twig, and came down this morning to a started computer.

I restarted computer and noticed just before restart the USB Light was off,
Ahhhhh!

So I switched off the computer and yes the USB light was OFF.

Last night it was on, Ahh haa Eureka!

So Pop

Do you think this could have something to do with it.

The wake up lan thing I can't find, so dn't think it's that.

So i'm thinking that when i switch off computer and USB light is still on
the front of the router, the computer will start by itself.

Any thoughts will be welcomed

I would think that when I shut the computer there should be no Power to the
USB ports

So just off now to device manager to have a look at these.

Thanks for any ideas

Twice now the computer has turned itself on.

You're not alone, by the way, had mine a year and still one morning in 5 I
find it has turned itself on.

I don't worry about it - I just put it back into standby again.

Remember since the service pack there is now an option in one of the setup
menus to let it do "housekeeping" at a time of your choosing - I set mine
for 4am as it was the time I would be least likely to be using it - maybe
that's why it switches on?

D.

Hi David,

Glad it's not just me.

I thought i solved the problem, but alas....No.

I would say it's the more of NOT knowing why.

There is nothing else I can think off. Searched the net, a few peeps are
having the same issue with no resolve :(

Same as you, i'm not that bothered about it. But would LOVE to know WHY it
is doing it.

I'll have a look for the housekeeping thingymibob and see if there is
anything in there.

Thanks

Hi Kezz,
From another David in Manchester UK
You are not alone, mine's a HP Media Centre and mine comes on by

tried this and that but still it does it so will be coming back to this
post often to see if there's any answer to it.

Bye for now, DG

If you find out you make sure you come back here and let me know.

It's so annoying.

Mine comes on at different times though.

Grrrrr

Kezz

Oh, I'm just 30 mins form Manchester. Let get our 2 compus together and see
which wins on starting up.

I think it's something to do with Media Centre (that I don't want)

Hi

Found the solution WoW

If you go to Pakard bell dot com

Hit download on the left, enter your serial number, it gives you all
downlaods available for you computer. (had a few computers and this is the
best website ever)

It gives you EVERY available download be it a driver, and update for your
modem or the impprtant one

BIOS

For me there were 2 upgrades. One of the ubdates is to solve the problem of
computer starting by itself.

How good is that?

Well downloaded it......And to scared to install it, LOl

Coz if things go wrong, you have no computer.

So what do I do, Take a chance and hope everything goes well or just put up
with computer starting by itself when it wants.

I dunno.

If i updates the Bios and it does go wrong will it be covered in the
warrenty?

Bet not.

So there is the solution.

Instructions are to put a CD-R disk in drive and double click on the
program.

I only have DVD disk, will I have to buy a Blank CD-R disk or will DVD disk
be ok.

I Want to do it but really am scared to do it.

Cheers guys

Another possibility...sticky start button on the computer case. If all
the other tests and fixes didn't help you might want to look into this.

Assuming that you won't be violating any product warrantee to do so, pop
the hood on the box. Unplug the computer first before popping the hood.
Trace the power button wire to the motherboard. Disconnect the
connection to the computer. Now plug it in. To start your computer
short the two connections for the Power Button on the motherboard with a
screw driver. It only takes a touch. Now shut down via Windows
software. Wait.... does it power - up by itself? If so there's a
software setting you overlooked, or there's a problem with power supply
and motherboard. If nothing happens, then it's a sticky power button.
If it can't be fixed by reseating the connection to the motherboard, you
can get a replacement power button from Cyberguys
http://www.cyberguys.com/ or JDR Microdevices.

Chances are that it's a little used BIOS setting or some software
setting buried deep in the registry. But I thought I'd post this on the
remote chance that it's the power button.

IMO: While it's still under warranty, take it back and tell them to fix it.
Let them hassle the problems with the updates; it's their responsibility to
get it working correctly.
Back up your important data first, of course. That means any pictures,
letters, etc., that are important to you.

Thanks Pop

I agree with this.

It's not only an update to the Bios, but a Bios update to stop the computer
starting by itself.

So that says something is wrong with the Bios in the first place.

Me and my luck if I did run the patch, it'll all go wrong, Lol

Kezz

Thanks
