Computer starting on its own

i just upgraded last week, and already posted all the stuff, but now i
need to know what to look for regarding the machine starting on its
own!

i'll come back after all day at work, and the computer is on. when i
log into windows the event manager just says that it booted at 12:19pm.
i have no clue as to why this would happen.

is there anything in the bios i should look for? i don't know how
windows could be doing this!

my only guess is that the lan somehow is starting it up. which concerns
me. i have time warner, and they just did all their upgrading/migrating
last week. i don't want to have to disconnect my lan cable every time i
shut down.

any help would be great.

are you talking 'cold start' or waking from standby?
is the socket/power strip on a 'switched' outlet?
in the bios do you have 'power on after outage enabled? (or something
similar)

You should have a setting (or maybe two) that wake the system from an
outside source.

Look for a BIOS setting in POWER MANAGEMENT that reads WAKE ON LAN or
something like that, and make sure it is set to off or no.

More info is available. Here is a quick link

cold start. power on after fail is not enabled. and i can't find any
specific wake on lan stuff in the BIOS. all the power management stuff
is more cryptic than i have seen before. its an ECS motherboard, with a
phoenix BIOS.

You need to hammer a stake thru its heart at midnight
and put chains of garlic all over the case and monitor.

Most likely you have one of the Wake Ons
enabled, most likely either the modem or lan.

Those are in the bios.

Its actually the bios, not Win.

Yeah, quite likely, but it could be the modem and an incoming call.
which concerns me. i have time warner, and they just

Just turn the Wake On off in the bios.

If it isnt that, see if it comes on with the lan disconnected and
the modem unplugged. If it does, it could just be a faulty front
panel power switch. Try unplugging that from the motherboard
and see if the problem stops happening.

In addition to "wake on" settings check your power on settings to make
sure the power on button is set to power on/off and not for hibernate.
If it's set to hibernate then XP checking for updates could turn on the
system.

Nope, there is nothing running in hibernate to turn the system on.

Some time ago I had a similar problem. After a lot of trial and error, I
isolated (but did not identify the exact source of the problem) to the
symantec suite. Once I pulled symantec off of the system, the problem
disappeared.

Godd Luck!
