Computer sporadically stops responding when clicking on any containers or OUs in Active Directory Us

This really annoys me. I need the DC working reliably so that I can get on
with my MCSE course study.

The DC is NOT connected to the internet and has the IP address of 10.10.0.1.
Two other client computers are assigned with 10.10.0.4 and 5, respectively.

Those three computers are all connected to a switch.

I have another computer that is meant to work as ICS host, but until I have
this forwarder issue resolved I disconnect this computer from the switch, so
let's just say I have one DC and two client computers, all with no internet
connection and just intranet.

The DC has all the hotfixes and security patches applied to it(as of nov.
8), has no firewall / antivirus software, and is free of virus and trojan
horses.

And the subject just about explains the problem... the DC simply freezes
randomly when clicking any OU or containers in 'Active Directory Users and
Computers' MMC snap-in, and no matter how long I wait (once I even waited
more than two hours) it just wouldn't work.

Any idea as to what could've gone wrong in this situation? I appreciate any
feedback from anyone. Have a good one!

Is your server using its own DNS server in DNS settings and have you created
a reverse lookup zone in your DNS server ? Of course check your EventLog for
further information. If you want to get a full report on your DC status run
dcdiag /v and netdiag /v from support tools.

Thank you for the reply Mr. Ladava.

Yes, I think my DC is using its own DNS server. In TCP/IP properties,
Preferred DNS server is set to 127.0.0.1, which is supposedly a lookback
address. Is this what you meant by using the DC's own DNS server? or should
I set this to 10.10.0.1 also?

And no, I haven't created a reverse lookup zone. how do I configure a
reverse lookup zone once I launch the new zone wizard? is the reverse lookup
zone absolutely necessary for a DC? I just followed steps in the following
link to configure a DC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/server/serversteps.asp

thanks in advance.

Set it to 10.0.0.1 or whatever its LAN IP address is.

When you launch the DNS wizard it will ask what sort of a zone you
wish to create. I suggest that you play around with it - you are
learning after all, and then come back with your questions. Just
remeber what you do, (keep a log?) so that you can undo it. Fiddling
with DNS is rarely fatal!

Cheers,

Cliff
