Computer shuts down & comes back by itself

The problem I am having started approximately 1 1/2 years ago. The computer
would just do a normal shut down and boot back up with no prompting from me.
Like it had a mind of it own.

I worked with the computer techs for the brand of computer, and other
computer techs, and proceeded to change the power supply, hard drive, mother
board, CPU, and upgraded to Windows XP Pro. I pretty much changed out the
guts of the computer except for the original hard drive, DVD & CD drives. I
actually pulled my original hard drive when I purchased the new one but
eventually the problem returned. I have reformatted several times, repaired
Windows several times. Normally I can get a few months out of it before it
decides to turn off and on by itself.

The one thing I have been noticing is that it looks like Windows Auto Update
service crashes and the computer looses its mind. I have tried several
things but nothing is working now. I have disabled Windows Update everywhere
I can find it.

My lastest session did not fix the problem. I did the Windows reinstall
repair (which usually works for a while), but not this time. I have been
trying to run the McAfee Stinger but the computer starts its little on and
off thing about half way through the scan.

Help.

The one item you did not mention was the case itself. There could be a
problem in the on/off/power switch and/or the wiring between it and the
motherboard and it's shorting out mysteriously whenever it feels like it.

Had that checked out early on in this ordeal. What I have for a computer is
a "K"Machine (used to be an EMachine until I changed out most of the parts).
I will try unplugging it and plugging it back in. The techs I worked with
earlier did not find that to be a problem, but, yes, it was checked. What I
am seeing in my log files is a notation that Windows Auto Update is shutting
down the computer.

Thanks, though, and if you have any other ideas I would be willing to listen

You should change the update mode to "notify" and see if this doesn't
improve the
situation. This is certainly one reason for the system to shutdown when you
have
not told it to.

Just a note, I found in Device Managment that there was a notation to disable
Automatic Updates. I have done so and will see if the computer likes me.
The only caveat is that I cannot download Windows Updates at this time. I
would have to start it up again to get to Updates. I think I can live with
that if this works.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I have been on the phone with Microsoft for the past four days getting
nowhere. They have had me reregister DLL files, clear my prefech temp files,
install Update KB893803v2, and a lot of other things. Nothing has worked.
Each time the computer shuts down I get the following information in my
WindowsUpdate.log file:

Misc =======Logging initialized (build: 7.0.6000.374, tz: -0400)=====
Misc =Process:\??\C:WINDOWS\System32\winlogon.exe
Misc =Module: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuaueng.dll
Shutdown FATAL:WUAutoUpdateAtShutdown failed, hr=8024A000
AU #####AU:Uninitializing Automatic Updates #####
Service ******
Service ** END ** Service: Service exit [Exit code = 0x240001)
Service ******

I do not have automatic updates turned on but it seems to want to try to run
and then the computer looses its mind.

Any input on this situation. I have tried to get Microsoft to look at this
log but they keep telling me it means nothing. I hope someone can think of
an answer.

Thank you all in advance. Look forward to some input.

It might be a bad key on the keyboard. Some keyboards have a power
on/off key on them and if the software is installed for that it can be a big
annoyance. I have one myself, but I don't turn the power on/off features
on, as the power on/off key is up next to the function keys and sometimes
I ended up missing the function key and hitting the power on/off key. Very
very annoying!

There is one other thing that I did not see listed, memory.

Something else that will help everyone out, is if you could provide
some answers to the following questions:

(1) Does the reboot occur only when your typing on your keyboard?
(2) Does the reboot occur when you walk away from the computer? You
can open the Event Viewer ( eventvwr.msc ) to see if it reboots when no
one is around.
(3) Have you ran the memory through memory tests?
(4) How did you install ( or reinstall )?
