i keep getting a shut down box which gives me 55 seconds
to close all programs and then computer shuts down. it
says that this is initiated by NT Authority system and
that the remote procedure call service terminated
unexpectantly. I see that there is patches and updates
that can be installed to correct problem. but my problem
is i can't stay online long enough to download. is there a
really quick fix that i can download as time is of the
essence. thank you kathy

Here is something that was suggested in the "microsoft.public.security"
newsgroup:

As soon as you have started your pc and windows loads, click Start, then
Run. In the textbox that appears, type:

shutdown -a (then click OK)

This should prevent the shutdown from taking place.

Note, however, that although you now have time, you still have the worm.
You will need to get rid of the worm first and then install the appropriate
patch for your operating system. The following link has detailed
instructions and links to the patches:

Hi kathy
soon as you turn your pc on go to your dos prompt program
or go to start then run and type in cmd and press ok when
a dos window opens enter shutdown -a and press enter this
will stop your pc from shuting down but leave the dos
windows open and if it comes up again just open the dos
window and press your right arrow and it will type the
shutdown command in again.
i hope this will help you
bye
