I don't know if this is a power management problem but I have the power
options set so my screen will black out after 5 minutes, and this works
normally, responds to tapping the space bar...but about once every two days
I'll come back to the computer and the screen will be black and won't
respond to tapping the space bar. The only thing I can do then is to
reboot, and lose whatever work was in progress.

How can I troubleshoot this and is this a known bug in the Win2000(sp1)
power management system. Is there a log somewhere that this problem would
show up in?

You can change the BIOS
When your computer first boots
look for the DEL and press the delete key
The BIOS, if you haven't messed with is DOS type screen and pretty straight
forward
Esc to get out of any window or menu or submenu.
Somewhere you will see a place you can change cuttung the monitor off after
"x" minutes.
And at the end you will need to type "Y" for yes to save and exit.
Just change it never shut it off and use your screen saver.

This may not be the fix you were looking for , but it will certainly keep
the monitor from turning off.

good luck,
don

Sounds like your pc is going dormant and yes this is a
know problem, get the latest service packs and all the
patchs, I can't believe you are still running with SVcp1
