John

This is going to be kind of long as I am going to try
describe all my problems. Hopfully someone with more
knowledge than me can help me. here it goes.

In the first part of December I was having some trouble
with my computer running slow, the CPU was running at
100% and the commit charge/page file usage running at
1.5GB. I posted a message here for help and someone named
Rob, I think gave me some good information about spyware
and trojans. I downloaded spybot and it found alot of
items but I think the damage was done. I did a system
restore and everything was great after that. Until now.

The other day I updated my virus scan and downloaded
Kazza again and the problem is back only worse I am
getting all kinds of warnings, programs don't run at all
and just to get on the internet to write this I had to
shut down EXPLORER.EXE in task manager.

Here is a list of what is going on now:

-CPU runs at 100%, commit charge at 1.5GB
-AOL will close repeatedly
-AOL will not run at all, requires restart and shut down
of explorer.exe
-cannot install microsoft updates
-programs stop responding or just disapear
-communications port will not close to release my phone
line. have to turn off the modem manualy.
-on shut down programs will not close need to do it
manualy.
-on shut down alot of the time I get to "windows is
shutting down" and it just stays there.

The following are some of the warnings I get:

-wupdater out of memory
-program:...rogramfiles\hpcenter\137903\program\backweb-
137903.exe
-backweb schedular dummy window: backweb-137903.exe-
application the instruction at "0x77e778ce" referenced
memory at "0x00884684" the memory could not be " written"
click on ok to terminate the program.

I don't know all that much about computers so if anyone
can help me fix my computer and get it running as it
should I will forever be greatfull.

I have windows XP
386MB RAM
intel celeron 1.7GHz
40GB hard drive
creative modem blaster V-92 (external)
CD-R\RW drive
DVD+R\RW drive
Mcafee virus scan
Mcafee firewall
spybot
adware

John,

Your most recent mistake was installing Kazaa again. Kazaa itself is
harmless (except for its abuse potential of illegally sharing
copyrighted material blah blah blah), but it is well known as a
bundler of spyware, which you will find easily with the help of Spybot
and two other free and equally helpful programs.

Backweb is one piece of crapware that you don't want on your computer.
Will its removal damage Kazaa? You'll find out quickly enough.

In addition to Spybot, get HijackThis, and expert advice at SWI
Forums. Complete instructions for getting and using it is available
at:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=5187

Also, Ad-Aware, which complements Spybot:

If running any of the three damages your internet access, causing you
to lose connectivity, a fourth utility may help:

Chuck
