Computer running very slowly

My machine has been running very sluggishly. I've run
the Task Manager and even with nothing currently "open",
it shows CPU usage at 80 - 100%. I'm running behind the
XP firewall and have a home network. However, something
is really slowing the machine down to a crawl. Wonder if
there is something I can go to and read about a complete
system clean up/scrub.

BTW, I have a teenage son who uses this computer and I
think he's probably downloaded something that has caused
this.

Your problem is possibly spyware.
You can find Ad-Aware and SpyBot via Google. Both are
free. Update and run daily.

If those programs don't help you can get an on-line virus
scan at any of the following sites. However, it's better
to have a good anti-virus program on your computer so you
can make use of its auto-protect feature. Update and run
weekly.

http://security.symantec.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.coledata.com/virusalert.htm
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/misc/av.php

and an on-line trojan scan at

http://www.trojanscan.com/trojanscan/scanner.htm

If your son has downloaded enough of <whatever> to fill
your hard drive this could create a problem with the page
file. See:

http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

You say you have a network so you might consider making
yourself the Administrator and restricting your son to his
own computer. Then, when his machine bogs down and won't
run to his satisfaction you can say "You should do
something about that!" and suggest the following sites.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/Security.htm
http://www.blackviper.com/index.html

And smile.
