I built a new PC before christmas using a loud (ish) PSU, well I bought a
silent one and all is good on the sound front BUT...

I was playing a game and this has happened a couple of times when I've
played this game, the computer has restarted itself.... I have looked on the
web site for the game and in it's FAQ states that the computer is getting
too hot and to fit a new fan or take the side off the computer?

Could that be true that the PC is getting too hot?

If I fitted an extractor fan would that be ok?

Are you running Windows XP? To me, it sounds like you are getting a Blue
Screen of Death and XP is then automatically restarting your PC.

Try disabling this XP feature by right clicking on Control Panel, then going
to:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery (Settings)

and deselect the "Automatically Restart" checkbox.

The next time your computer crashes while playing the game, you should get a
blue screen with a STOP error. Write down the STOP error and then do a
Google/Google Groups search to find out what it means and diagnose the
problem.

If it was a heat problem and the graphics card was getting too hot, your
picture would most likely freeze/lock, rather than get a reboot, so I don't
think that's an issue. However, if your CPU is getting too hot, that could
make your system unstable and lead to the bluescreen. Ideally you need a
case with a fan pushing air out of the back of the case at CPU height (as
hot air rises, of course!)

You could do a lot worse than check out the nicely priced Chenbro 'Gaming
bomb' case, which can take a 120mm fan at the back, and a 92mm fan at the
front to give you a good, cool airflow through the case. Throw in a decent
fanbus with temperature monitoring (Akasa, maybe?) and you'll have a cool,
stable (and not too noisy) PC.

Good luck!

A simple test for heat problems is to pull the case off, blow a small house
fan into the computer. If this takes care of the problem, then you need more
cooling on your computer case.

sounds plausible. could be CPU or GFX overheating.
next time it does it, reboot and look in the bios temp monitoring and post
your temp.
try it with the side of the case removed. if this helps, check all your
fans are working and add more if necessary...i'm presuming you've got at
least one 80mm case fan....

I have a low noise PSU with two fans on it, one that points into the
computer to remove the hot air and the other pointing out like the normal
PSU..

I have switch off the restart computer and I'll see what comes up

Thanks for the advice

Just had a crash

STOP 0x0000007A (0XC879F8,0xC000009C,0xE1E7E17C,0x0653F800)

I'll do a search, any ideas these end?

Test your RAM with memtest86.
You can also analyze your dump file with dumpchk.

Also, look in the folder C:\WINDOWS\LogFiles\Watchdog and see if there are
any log files. They can be viewed, using notepad.

I have ran a program called HDD Health and played the game again

This time something came up

Raw read Error rate changes from 65 to 64

Does this sound like a bad part of the HD, is it fixable?

That doesn't indicate any kind of problem.
You never commented on my previous reply... Have you run those tests yet?

one thing I have done was to go to seagate.com and do an online check of my
HD, there's error's on the drive..... So I'll do a check from boot up for
the HD to see what comes of that...

I will also do the memtest check

You can open the case and place a table fan blowing into the case. If
your game runs fine without restarting you know you have a heat
problem. You can load the Solitaire card game, and hold the Enter key
down (keep it depressed with some sort of weight for 20 minutes) to
heat up the CPU while the fan is on it.

I have ran seagate hd test.... it found a bad sector.... the information
that came up was

Bad Sector LBA:6311841 used in file :/$badclus. If this is a directory, any
conatined files or subdirectories may be inaccessible.

So it looks like that might be the problem

I will run memtest in the morning, any ideas how long it takes.... I have
256mb ram
