Computer restarted randomly

That's just a message telling you it's already crashed so it doesn't have any debug info attached, you'll need to go back a couple of minutes to see if anything happened causing it to crash :).

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

I have had a look through and I was not able to find any errors a few minutes before this happend. I was just on the internet when a bule screen flashed up but I was not able to get any of the error cods of it, then the computer restarted.

Could this have something to do with me overclcoking the GFX card?

Thanks

That doesn't sound like a software fault then, so it could well be your OC'd graphics card... but as you weren't stressing the hardware at the time then it probably isn't.

Try disabling automatic restart on BSOD and then you can write down all the information you need next time it happens (if it does indeed occur again):

  1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Tip: In a hurry? Type system in the search box after clicking Start. Choose System from the list of results and then skip to Step 4.
  2. Click on the System and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.
  3. Click on the System link.
  4. In the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link.
  5. Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.
  6. In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
  7. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
  8. Click OK in the System Properties window.
  9. You can now close the System window.
  10. From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. Rebooting manually will be necessary.

Ok just go this blue screen come up with this error on it. NVIDDMKM.SYS This happend when 3dmark was running, I was not overclocking it either.

Any ideas what this could be

thanks,

In that case I'd update your video drivers to the latest if they aren't already, as that's an NVIDIA driver file. However if they are the latest then it might need some more looking in to.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

I was using the latest drivers at the time of this. I have now rolled back to some other drivers that I was using and I am going to test it and see how it goes. What shall I do next if this error reoccurs?

Thanks,

Wiz

If you've just recently updated then rolling back might sort it - if not, I've not got a clue. Normally with errors like that its a bug in a driver release, so changing it usually works. :)

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

Is there any possibility that I could have damaged the GFX card when over clocking it too much?

Thanks,

Wiz

I have been testing this GFX card on another pc and it has completed successfully 6times on 3dmark, so I don't think that it can be a fault with the GFX card. I am going to test the ram next and then do a fresh install of vista and see if that corrects the issue.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks,

Wiz

Hi use this to test your memory and cpu

http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm

it is called orthos it will stress out your CPU and memory to test it for failures.
Leave this on for at least 10 hours although 24 hours would be more suitable.

The other thing I was wondering about is your memory timings and voltage settings in the BIOS
have you altered these?

Hi psd99,

Thanks for your reply.

I have now done a clean install and it seems to be holding up at the moment. I will try orthos and see how it goes. One other thing is that I have noteced that the Intel stock CPU fan takes about 5 mintutes to start spining it trys to spin adn then stops, it works after 5 mins of the computer being turned on. Is this normal for this type of CPU fan?

Thanks,

Wiz

At last...where you been!?

Okay that fan business doesn't sound good to me. I've never used an Intel stock fan but from all my CPU fan experience it is the normality for those things to spin as soon as you power on the system. Have you changed anything in the BIOS?

Hi psd99,

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry I was reinstalling Vista and running lots of tests on the computer last night and I was quite busy aswell.

The fan has all ways been like it ever scince I built it. I would had thought the same as you, when you power on the system the fan should spin up. I have not changed any settings in the BIOS. Once its up its ok, just can't work out where it stops and starts? I thought it could be the boad might wait until the CPU gets to hot and then cut in. I am not sure if this could be an issue with the power on the board or an issue with the fan.

I run 3DMARK 6 times last night and it completed fisrt time. I am going to do some more testing today aswell.

Wiz

Hi Wiz,

The Stock Cooler should powerup as soon as you turn on the PC, thats not good man.

Sounds like the fan controller on it is going, or its not getting enough power, also check its seated properly and connected right.

Use Core Temp to monitor the CPU temp at startup.

Hi WF,

Thanks for your reply.

I have now disabled the Smart Fan Control on the PC Health Status in the BIOS and now the CPU fans seems to be spining up when I turn the computer on.

Thanks,

Wiz
