Computer reboots when transferring files

Hi all,

Is there any reason why my computer would reboot itself when
transferring files (usually large amounts of them) across hard drives?
It is an extremely annoying problem, and usually results in the check
disk utility being run when the computer reboots.

Hi,

Do you have a Promise controller ?

To help determine if it's software or hardware, you could boot your
computer on a linux live CD, BartPE or UBCD4WIN and try that copy from
there. Does it work ?

Could be chipset overheating. If it is, don't expect your mainboard
to live much longer. You may want to check the chipset fan (if there
is one).

May also be a marginal PSU that overheats.

Did this problem appear recently?

Yes. Check the event log if its XP.
 
Hi all,

The source of the file transfers was a HD connected via a 'Win2000
Promise Ultra100 IDE Controller'.

I finished transferring all the files off this HD (by putting up with
the random rebooting), and set about recovering the capacity off this
HD. I ran into the '127GB limit problem' with this hard drive, and when
I first got it I was too much in a hurry to fix it, so I just formatted
it at 127GB (it's a 200GB drive). I have since updated the Promise
Ultra100 drivers, and reformatted the drive to 200GB (since the update
it was correctly identifying the capacities).

Since then I haven't had any problems with it, so I'm thinking it may
have had something to do with the OS not seeing the HD's capacity
(interestingly enough, during boot up, the BIOS still sees the drive as
131 000 MB).

I have had similar problems before with other HDs when transferring
large amounts of files, and in these situations nealry always disk
check runs and finds errors in the file system, so I was maybe thinking
that it was somehow corrupt file systems that was causing the reboot
(although I don't know why it would do this).

In summary, the problem seems to have gone away now. I'm using Windows
2000 professional and not XP.

Unlikely, its much more likely to be a Promise problem.

And you still havent said what shows in the event log.
I have had similar problems before with other HDs when

Likely a Promise quirk.
