For the past week, about once a day my computer will shut off in the middle
of whatever it's doing, and reboot itself up to the login screen. I'd like
to know how to troubleshoot this. I've looked in the Dr Watson log but the
only entries are from a month ago. These shutoffs usually happen when I'm
away from the computer or not paying attention, so I've never seen a reason
for the occurance.

I'd appreciate some advice on troubleshooting this kind of problem.

open System Properties

either by
right click on My Computer and selecting Properties
or by
press the Windows logo key and Pause

in System Properties select the advanced tab
Startup and Recovery button
untick automatically reboot

now if it crashes again it will display a blue screen with white
text.

Often the last item listed on that screen is the device or
service that is causing the crash.

Steve has a great idea but if you never see the blue screen and it just
spontaneously reboots with no errors then it's likely a hardware problem. I
had a server one time that used to do this exact same thing and it
eventually turned out to be a bad motherboard. I assume it was one of the
ones with all the bad caps that were going around but once the manufacturer
replaced it I never had the problem again.
