It may not be your router thats causing the reboots, it could be a conflict
with the network card in your pc, you wont know this as the pc reboots
without any error messages showing.

It would help if you could disable the automatic restart so you could see
any error messages to do this, go to the start menu ( bottom left hand side
START ) find MY COMPUTER icon and right click on it, select PROPERTIES.
Look at the SYSTEM PROPERTIES box and click in the ADVANCED tab at the top.

At the bottom of the box under STARTUP AND RECOVERY, click the settings
button.
A new box will open and just halfway down is AUTOMATICALLY RESTART, remove
the tick from this and then click OK on the bottom of the box to close it
and OK again on SYSTEM PROPERTIES to close that box.

Now with a bit of luck, when the cause of the reboot happens, you should get
some error message ( blue screen ) which may point to a possible cause,
write it down and when your on line, post the message.

As for the reasons why this is happening, it could be a corrupt network card
driver, a conflict with another card or IRQ that only shows up at random.

Sasser worm crashing the lsass service.

Block port 445 and get the critical Windows updates.

The firewall in the router should stop that as it does on mine, unless he is
running in a DMZ or has forwarded that port.

Not being familiar with that router, I thought it might be worth
mentioning anyway. It does sound like something incoming is
causing the crash though, seeing as the disconnecting of the
cable makes the symptom disappear.

There is a new worm out - reputed to be one of the Gaobot/Agobot family (AJE
variant). It seems to be able to infect machines that are fully patched and
none of the major virus vendors has published anything on it yet.

Like a lot of these worms, it can cause rebooting. I would think your
router would block it but it might be worth a look.

Check Task Manager to see if you have a process Norton.exe or Lmsas.exe
running.

Hmm, Sophos says its 'latest' will ID lmsas.DLL; plenty of info
on ..saSS (double "s") and ...sasss (tripple "s).

Any more info on "Lmsas.exe"?

I think lmsas.exe was a red herring - I had heard about it from one of the
local government ISB's but there is nothing about it on the Symantec
website.

GAOBOT.AJE does not infect a fully patched PC but there have been reports of
fully patched W2K servers getting hit.
