my computers starts up automatically a few hours after it
has been switched off. The only way to keep it off is
switching it off at the mains.

Has any one had this problem? Help

That is bizarre. When you find out let me know what it is.

Check START UP options in the BIOS settings (consult the motherboard manual).

Does your nic have a setting for "Remote wakeup", "Restart on LAN
wakeup" or similar?

Sounds like you have it setup to wake up on some external
event, like WOL (Wake On Lan). Could be that another
system is telling yours to wake up. Google "wake on lan",
or "wake on ring" for more info. See
http://www.buildorbuy.org/pcwakeup.html for some
background.

I've looking for this "lan wake up" bu cannot find it. I
have got Windows XP can you direct me to the right place.

Thanks
Pili

This is a long path - good luck following it.

Control Panel - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager
In Device Manager, find the NIC under Network Adaptors
Right click - Properties
Check the Advanced and Power Management tabs.

I have now sorted it out. Thanks for all your help. I
got into Power Managment but I could not do it following
th path you told me. I managed to do it getting to the
CMOS screen by pressing "delete" on the first screen as
the computer starts up.

Two of the power options somehow were enabled, so I
disabled them and the computer has not re-started
automatically since.

Thanks again.
