Computer Processes

Am running Win XP on my desktop PC. I have about 63 processes running. Is
this ok? How many should be running at any one time? How should I turn
them off? Someone in another forum suggested turning off all that are not
Microsoft or going into all programs and setting them not to load at
startup. I tried turning some off and it said I need to log in as
administrator. I am logged in as administrator. Any suggestions?

63 processes is not an unduly high number of processes. Normally you
should be concerned as to which are making excessive demands on the CPU
and available memory. Over reliance on using the pagefile is often the
cause of poor system performance. Can you please provide more
information regarding the nature of your problem.

How much RAM memory does your computer have?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Actually, I am not having any known problems. I belong to a Sony software
forum and as I read information there I have noticed others mentioning the
number of processes running and am more curious about this than anything
else.

RAM - 1.93GB

Commit Charge:
Total - 539012
Limit - 3968724
Peak - 678760

6 processes with using the largest amounts:
Desktop Weather
DMA Scheduler (what is this?)
wlmail.exe (Windows live mail, I think)
svchost.exe - SYSTEM (what is the svchost? There is more than one)
Mcshield.exe - SYSTEM (Is this part of McAfee?)

I can't recall the exact Sony forum I was reviewing but I believe some
mentioned if there are excessive processes running it can slow down your
system. I'm slowly learning how to create video projects and, to the best
of my knowledge, the computer is functioning properly for those projects.
As mentioned above, I'm more curious than anything about the processes. If
you know of a web site that explains the processes in simple terms, I'd be
interesting in reading more about them.
