My computer is roughly a year old, and just recently in
the past few days my Intel Active Monitor, that monitors
the motherboard etc., has said that the system has
overheated, reaching more than 50 degrees C. I was
wondering if anyone had any suggestions to help with the
problem. I have always left my computer on for days, and
now more than 12 hours will over heat!

Someone please help

Wow - okay - this is not likely an Operating System problem.
Almost never in fact.. Almost...

Your components have FANS..
Have you opened the case to be sure the fans are all working properly?

Have you blocked the airflow around the case in any way?

Have you changed the external room temperature (i.e. - started turning off
your A/C unit while you are out, etc..)?

Hardware overheating is generally a hardware issue. Some component has or
is going bad on you. Look at the fans first.. Then it's a possibility the
CPU or motherboard is crapping out on you.

I have just had a new computer for one week and the temps show as,
Motherboard 44C, CPU 50C and AUX as 40C No warnings as yet though
