Computer no longer recognizes CD-ROM

I am attempting to build another computer for my son. However I cannot get
the computer to recognize the CD-ROM drive. For this reason I can't load
Windows XP Pro. I put the CD drive back into my computer (where it came from
originally) and now it doesn't recognize it either. The drive has power
(spins up, tray opens, etc.), but there is no listing in My Computer or in
the Device Manager. Could this just be another case of the drive being
jumpered incorrectly?

What does the BIOS Autodetect show for the Channel/Tap it's
connected to ? Enter BIOS setup and you'll see a listing or a
category ( IDE Devices ) where BIOS shows what devices it has
detected.

One common slip up is bending pins inside the connector housing
on the drive or Optical. Usually, that comes about from trying to
insert the cable with the "Notched" side inverted. If you have a
bent or collapsed pin - be very careful trying to straighten it out.
Too much pressure and the pin will shear off. Also, if you have a
spare 40-pin cable I would try that - but since it doesn't detect in
the original PC it sounds like a drive issue.

Does it see the cdrom drive with one of my custom bootdisk? If so, then
you dont have a hardware problem.
