Hi guys,

Im having a problem re-instating a computer into the
network. One of the drives in our server went down and
needed to be replaced. The drive was replaced and windows
reinstalled, during the re-installation it asks you to
name the computer. Obviously i need to name the computer
the same name it had before it was restored. However, when
i try to do that, it tells me that the computer already
exists and to choose a different name. That wouldnt be a
problem if this was a home network, but this computer is
part of a large network and other departments have their
directories set to recognize our server with the original
name. Is there any way that i can keep the same name?
Thanks for your time.

You just need to remove the computer name - look at
WINS/DHCP/DNS entries to remove it, then try adding it
again.

Uhmmm, not really.

look at your domain controller and remove the computer account (under
computers), active directory users and computers. (or, server manager for
4.0)

You need to recreate the computer account because of the SID change.
