sup guys,

I have this strange problem. In my Win2k DC, when I try to search by
computer name, I cant search it, I can ping by the name and the ip w/o any
problem. I can also search the computer name by IP and it gets it. But,
almost never with name. Anyone have this problem in the past?

How are you searching? Thru AD search or "Find" tool?

If using AD search, keep in mind, the search is intiated by a query to DNS
to find the GC to search. If you are using your ISP's DNS in your IP
properties, that can thwart the search (and other AD functionality). So if
there is anything blocking communication to the GC, many errors will occur.

I see. That's using the Browser service which is a NetBIOS functionality and
has nothing to do with AD or DNS.

To ensure that it works properly, make sure NetBIOS is not disabled.

If in a multiple segmented (subnetted) environment (such as mutliple remote
locations), this function does not cross routers. Routers stop NetBIOS
broadcasts. To make that work, you need to offer NetBIOS support for your
enterprise, and the best way to do that is by using WINS.
