I have three (3) XP Pro pc's running on a home network into a Netgear FR114P router & Morotrola Surfboard 5100 cable modem. Everything appears to be working fine. There is one (1) glitch that I can't figure out however... when viewing the "attached devices" from the router management screen, I can see two (2) of the computers (name) but one (1) is listed as "unknown device". No amount of rebooting solves the problem - all machines are configured identically. I do not have Netbui transport loaded and I believe it is a requirement for file sharing

Can someone verify netbui is/is not required and, any tips as to why one of the pc's computer name is not visible by the router? Thanks in advance for any help...

Hi Linkschamp,

Can you 'ping' the 'unknown device' computer?

I had a problem where I could not get my internal network to work, even
though all PCs could access the Internet via the Netgear ADSL Router. As in
your case the router browser reported my laptop PC with a device name of
UNKNOWN and I could not send a ping to it from any other device including
the router itself.

Turned out the problem was with Norton Internet Security's firewall on my
laptop. I configured the NIS Personal Firewall, selected the Networking tab
and added the range of IP addresses that the router uses for my home LAN as
Trusted zone computers. I did not have to disable NIS after this change,
pings worked OK and the laptops device name was now seen by router. Also, I
now have a functioning home network.

Good luck!

Hi Brendan,

I too cannot "ping" the "unknown device" using IP address assinged by the router (ping right from router). I have no firewall software running, and none of the XP ICF's are turned on at any machine. Again, two (2) of the machines are running upstairs - one of which is seen, the other is not - both setup EXACTLY the same. I even rebooted the router to reassign the dynamic IP's (which it did) but with the same results... Can't seem to figure this one out... in any case, thanks
for your help!
