On Windows 2000, under System Tools of Computer Management, there was an
entry for 'System Information'. I cannot find it on Windows XP (Pro). Is
there a way to get it back? Or is this information located in another
place?

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, I have noticed this too... And if I author a Microsoft
Management Console, add System Information (it is listed as
an ActiveX Control), then select the System Information
node in the MMC I get a message saying:

System Information must be run using Help Center

So... In addition to using the Start Menu shortcut as suggested
by "Carey Frisch [MVP]", you can start the System Information
tool by clicking Start, clicking Run, typing the following
command and clicking OK:

msinfo32

Also, you can run it by opening the Windows XP Help and
Support Center (to its Home Page). Clicking: Use Tools to
view your computer information and diagnose problems.
Clicking: Advanced System Information. Clicking:
View detailed system information (Msinfo32.exe).

Why did microsoft decide to remove it?
I have found that you can copy the dll:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared \MSInfo\msinfo32.dll
from a win2k box to a xp machine (In the same location)
register it:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
MSInfo\msinfo32.dll" then it works.
I am generally wary of doing these types of things (I dont want the 400
computers I support to go haywire later on in life).

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Computer Management.

If your just refering to opening computer management you can also right click
on my computer and click manage or type compmgmt.msc from the run command.

My problem is System Information is not located in Computer Management
anymore. The discussion that I replied to were all refering to this issue so
I didnt figure it was necessary to explain further.

If you don't reply within the original thread, there's no way for others to
know the context unless they hunt down every subject line they see. If this
is the thread, yours is the only post I'm showing in this thread.

You need only type, "msinfo32" into the run box and press enter to bring up
the old System Information.

You can also open Help and Support on the Start Menu, in the search box,
type System Information, click "Get Information About Your Computer," then
click "Finde information about the hardware installed on the computer,"
then, click the appropriate link under "My Computer Information," but the
above is what you are seeking.

I appologize I was not aware of that.

Yes I know you can run msinfo32 from run command but it is much less
convient than the previous way of doing it. With the seperation of the two
not if I need to know system information of a system I am troubleshooting I
am required to do 8 steps instead of 3 and swap between applications when in
the begining it was all in one and on top of that if I were to be comparing
systems it would become even more of a headache.
Is there any perticuar reason why they were seperated? Is there any reason
I should not copy the old dll from win2k?

It's never a good idea to copy files from a different OS and XP won't allow
you to replace system files. Upon reboot it will simply revert to the XP
file. What about simply creating a shortcut to msinfo32.exe on the desktop.

I don't know why it was changed, though it appears they wanted System
Information integrated with the Help system but that's pure speculation on
my part. I didn't use Win2k but in Windows 9x you either made a shortcut to
msinfo32 or you had to navigate the Start Menu or use the run command to
access this applet. I'm not sure what steps you need to do now that you
didn't do in Win2k but it would seem a desktop or taskbar shortcut would
resolve the issue.
