Computer loses track of date & time?

Most of the time when I boot up my computer, it loses track of the date & time,
mostly reverting to some date way back in Dec 1998. But sometimes it reverts to
the date & time that I last had my computer on.

When I boot up, I almost always have to set the date & time to current
standards.

Does that mean the CMOS battery definitely needs changing, or can it be some
other issue or part involved?

Assume it is the battery, especially if the pc is more than 2 years old. If
changing
the battery doesn't help, then worry about other possible causes.

Most likely the CMOS battery. Had this problem once before myself, and
that did the trick.
