For some reason since I changed video cards, now when ever i download or
copy any files locally, downloaded or over my LAN my pc freezes completely
forcing a hard reset. I recently changed from an ATI AIW X800XT (this never
happened with that card installed) to a Gainward 7800 GS+ (AGP). Seems to me
this is when it started happening when i made that change. Prior to removing
the ATI card i did nuke all the ATI drivers on my system. Everything else
seems to be fine, gaming, music, video clips, etc. only when i try to copy
files. This system has never been overclocked in any way. If anyone happens
to have experienced similar behavor like this or would know why this is
happening your sharing of info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your
time & efforts..

Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939 Mobo
AMD 64 Dual Core 4800+
2.0GB OCZ DDR400 Rev. 2
2x WD Raptors SATA RAID 0
Gainward 512MB 7800GS GS+
WinXP Pro SP2

Ah recently I upgrade to 7800GS and sometimes occur mild-freeze while on
video editing. i never experince like this before with 6600GT for over 18
months.

I bit worried with 7800GS I suspect.

You don't say what the MoBo chipset is. I am suspecting Via? If it is,
download the latest driver from Via; they changed it about a month ago. I
think it's the Hyperion driver IIRC; they changed the PCI to AGP interface.

The funny thing is, it should have been locking up under the ATi card! They
are the worst for this condition.

As a test, try removing the PCI to AGP interface driver, and install Windows
PCI to PCI interface driver. If the problem goes away, that is the culprit.

Sorry, its an nForce3 chipset and i updated the chipset drivers about 2
months ago.

How big is your power supply? My guess is that your new card pushed your
power requirements up and that your supply can't handle the load.

Its a 600W truepower or real power coolermaster brand new

Sorry i double checked and its an:
OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W ATX 2.2/EPS/SLI Power Supply
Brand new, just installed 2 weex ago.

Did your lockup problems start before or after you installed the new power
supply?

After install, but it was fine up until I switched video cards. did lots of
copying files over the past 2 weex and no lockups, not until i changed video
cards. strange thing is now its not happening. did some file copying today
and it worked fine with no lockups. Surely the hardware in my system cant be
using all 600W of power as it says this is an SLi ready PSU. Also the PSU I
had before this new one was a 500W cheapo and ran all this hardware i have
(except for new video card) for over a year until it developed leaky caps
and had to be replaced. Heres a full listing of what i have being powered by
my PSU right now:

Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939 Mobo (AGP 8X)
AMD 64 Dual Core 4800+ (Approx 110W full load)
2.0GB OCZ Platinum DDR400 (512x4)
2x WD Raptors 36GBx2 @ 10K RPM SATA RAID 0
Gainward 512MB 7800GS GS+
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer (PCI)
Generic PCTel 56K Modem (PCI)
Gigabyte WLAN 802.11G WiFi Card (PCI)
Generic 16X DVD Rom Drive
Plextor PX708A DVD Writer
Matrix Orbital Silver Baybus MX222 USB v2
Standard Floppy disk drive
Approx 10x80mm LED color changing case fans and suprisingly quiet.
WinXP Pro SP2

Thanks again for your info.

Anonymous,

Remember, not only do you have an overall limit to what the complete
power supply can supply but EACH voltage output has a maximum current
that it can supply. Even if the total draw is below the overall max.,
if any one supply is taxed beyond its individual limit you could have
a problem.

Its just like your house - the main breaker may be a 200 amp
breaker, but if you pull more than say 20 amps on a specific circuit
that breaker will pop even if the overall draw is less than 200 amps
(the difference being that on a computer PS there are no breakers on
each voltage regulator; instead, an electronic shutdown circuit is
used).

Total up the power draw for each voltage output and see if you are at
or above the limit on any one output.

Very well put. I didn't think of it like that. this particular power supply
has 3x12v rails and after reading your post i looked into it and realized i
had too many devices running off of one rail at a time. i seperated them
accordingly to get more of a load balance and then did some extensive
testing with no problems at all. thanks for your help.

Glad I was of some help. I've seen this problem crop up more than
once, usually after an upgrade of a device that takes quite a bit of
current (like going from a CD-ROM drive to a CD-RW drive).
