Computer lockups

I was wondering if anyone could help on this issue.
For sometime my computer has been locking up on and off
it seems good for months then starts again. I've
reinstalled windows and the problem still remains. I'm
leaning more towards a hardware issue now but not sure.
Every once and awhile I lose all movement no mouse or any
keys I press brings it back or even responds to anything
it almost acts as though it's in a sleep mode or
something but it's not that cause I can be surfing the
net or just working online when it does it. No
particular software to narrow it down too that I can
think of. However I have notice on occasion a web cam on
a usb port freezes but only with the infamous Yahoo
messinger.
I'm curious could USB hardware cause this type of
activity? Or is it something else? I've even thought it
might have been my nic card but drivers are up to date on
that.
I run XP Pro
1.9ghz Pentium
512MB
Any help or insight would greatly be appreciated.

Did you ever find any resolution to this problem? I am
experiencing the same thing and would appreciate any
advice you might give me.

No sorry I didn't not yet. But I have been thinking. I
reinstalled windows and installed the critical ones and
only started to get some of the other miscellaneous
ones. On Sunday These are the updates I got I know one
of them was for USB seems after these updates is when it
came back again. I have reinstalled windows like 3 times
and even upgraded to XP Pro just recently now it seems
today it has happened twice so far.
I've gone through the obvious things racking my brain and
haven't found anything. I even changed Antivirus because
I thought Norton Security was causing the problem but
that wasn't it.
So for now Pres I guess we're stuck on this one.

Well, we should start a club! I'm having the same
problems and have tried virtually the same fixes and to
no avail. If either of you stumbles onto something that
helps this problem - please email me too! And, I'll do

You should always install every critical security update.

When critical security updates cause performance issues, it's usually for
one of two reasons:
1. users are unfamiliar with best installation practices (e.g. temporarily
disable virus scanning), or
2. Windows updates do not anticipate unsupported changes to the operating
system, such as may be caused by spyware or when users have attempted to
'optimize' their registry.

Critical updates are thoroughly tested before they are released. Yes, it's
true that individual configurations can be adversely affected - Microsoft
can't anticipate every possible config in the world - but these are rare.
Only once has a security update caused problems for a significant number of
users, and Microsoft fixed that particular problem quickly.

Might I join in with this thread.

I have a dual Internet connection both running through PCI modems. The
first is an ADSL connection and the other, a standard dial-up, which is
for use as a back-up. These set up has been quite happy until now when a
total freeze occurs about 10 seconds after a connection has been made
using the SDU connection, whether this be for Internet, email or faxing
purposes. Both modem drivers have been reinstalled, but here is the odd
thing, System Restore now will not restore back further than a week ago.
There are several dates indicated going back into March, but the restore
if tried is reported as being 'incomplete', without making any
alterations to the system.

I note what has been said about the WinXP update number 822603, and I
did install this back last October without any subsequent problems. The
freezing of the machine is odd in that Ctrl/Alt/Del has no effect and
the system has to be re-booted. Virus checker up to date and shows
nothing on a scan.

Has anyone had any further ideas on how to resolve this annoying
problem?
 
I have a dell lattitude and having the same problem , i just got the notebook and thinking of returning it back to the fella, i wonder if anyone has found a solution to the problem
