I've had a daily problem with 2000Pro ever since I
installed it about 1 month ago. My computer locks up and
the only thing I can do is re-boot. I get the following 2
messages in the Event Log whenever it crashes...

1) The value named There was no Announce in the server's
Registry key LanmanServer\Parameters was invalid. The
value was ignored, and processing continued.

2) The ASPI32 service failed to start due to the following
error: The system cannot find the file specified.

I am not computer literate enough to understand what I
need to do to fix this problem. The install was a clean
install. If you need more information, just ask. Thanks
in advance for any help. drew

* Try creating a Reg_Dword value named
'Announce'
in
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
set the value to 240 decimal.

| 2) The ASPI32 service failed to start due to the following

* You'll find it in Device Manager under Non-Plug and Play drivers. You'll
need to View|Show Hidden Devices I believe the driver is Adaptec and has to
do with Adaptec Easy CD Creator software.

* Most likely the lockup is unrelated to these. Check the hardware
manufacturer's web site for the latest Windows 2000 driver for your devices.
Especially your graphics adapter.

.
Thanks Dave for responding, I'll check this out and get
back to you via this post. Thanks again for your time in
responding. My computer is custom built and the guy that
sold it to me says he won't mess with software problems,
so I'm on my own.

Helpful hints...
lanman server might be an automatic log off, these two string values are
in the registry to give you a hint as to what they do...
"Amount of idle time required before disconnecting session"
"Automatically log off users when logon time expires (local)"
This operating system by default will expire user logons "and who knows
what else it can surprise you with?". There are also a myriad of hardware
incompatabilities that may occur, such as a motherboard that is older and
hasn't been manually tweeked to handle standby power issues or a bios
that hasn't been told how to come out of standby.
You may have to dig around in your administrative tools and user accounts
to figure out just how you have things set up to work.

Perhaps someone knows of some really good sites with smart tutorials???

Next hint...If you have Adaptec Easy CD Creator or Adaptec DirectCD you
may want to check this link, it sounds simular to your problem...

This is just guess work and I wish I could throw in some more
possibilities, good luck.
