Have a generic AMD Athlon computer, had WIndows 98 SE on
it. Tried to update, didn't take. Did a new install. Tha
seemed to work, but frequently for no particular reason I
can positevely identify, it locks up. Mouse dead,
keyboard dead, CTRL ALT Del, doesn't work. Seems to
happen most often when doing copy or paste, but at other
times it locks up for no apparent reason. Did all the
patches, it seems to be working fine on my network, can
browse the internet, etc. If I don't touch it, it seems
to work for hours. Then I can use if for some time, then
locks up. Any idea what might be causing this?

There is not a good way to t-shoot hard locks. They are usually going to
be hardware or at least a low level driver. I would check device manger
for any problem devices. I would also check the system event log for any
critical errors. The errors may not occur when the system locks but some
other time. So try to elimiate any critical errors. Also pay specical
attention to any utility type software like antivirus that is installed.
