have windows 2000 pro, computer starts up but when we try to open the "my
computer" folder or any folders associated with that, the entire computer
locks up, has to be restarted. We can play games on it but really nothing
else can be done with it. Bad part is that we just got a laptop with windows
xp and need to transfer some movies that are on the other computer to the new
but can't because we can't open "my computer".
Does anyone have suggestions, that computer is old, do not have original disk
with it and the modems no longer work on it, so we don't have access to
internet through that computer - only with the laptop.

try temporarily disabling the CD drive in device manager to see if that
"cures" the problem. Doing this will point to whether it's the hard drive or
the cd thats at fault

Another option to try is to delete all the temporary files , usually
located at
%temp% and %tmp%.
After deleting all those files, restart.
Also, to speed up your computer use, and reclaim disk space, use
ccleaner ( http://www.ccleaner.com ).
