Computer Locking up/Slow processing

I am experiencing very frequent freezing in all programs & failure of the
mouse to engage options on pop up windows (eg "Allow this program outside of
protected zone" window) etc
Additionally, even though my notebook is only weeks old & ,I thought, cutting
edge technology, processing speed & download speeds are appalling-far ,far
worse than older operating systems.
Sure, I am on dial up,however downloads are 5,10 or even 20 times slower
than "spproximate or estimated download times"
Is this a Vista glitch, hardware or some other cause.
I have run several bug clearing programs and supposedly eliminated things
like spyware, trojan & worms etc,but this problem has existed since the first
connect.
So far, I am extremely disappointed with the performance of the notebook
(Asus) & the operating system (Vista Home premium).
Has anyone any ideas/suggestions on what might be wrong & how to solve it?

I have the same problem, also with an Asus notebook and Vista Home premium.
Still looking for a solution ...

You had / have spyware, trojans and worms on your machine?

What is the spec of the machine? Who set it up? If it was a factory setup
there could be junk installed by them running on it.

Have you tried a system restore or a rebuild?

I have the same situation on a desktop. Intermittently, the computer hangs
for 5 to 15 seconds and then responds normally. I have not had it freeze
where I had to reboot, but the constant non-responsiveness is not what I was
expecting with Vista Business. I have a clean install, 2gig of PC6400,
Athlon x2 5600, nVidia 7900 video card with 256 mb, 7200rpm hard drive and a
Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 (Microsoft).

I have checked the error reports - nothing
I have done mem checks and all is okay.
DSL Connection with 6000+/700+ speeds, which I have no problem with.

The computer is not part of a network although it is running behind a D-Link
Wireless router. Never had a problem with XP.

What additional information should I supply to diagnose this issue?

Thanks in advance. Best Regards.

open the start menu and enter

problem

the hit enter and see what you can get from that tool.

Specs are- core 2 Duo T7200 2Ghz processor, 2gb Ram, 120gb HDD.
A "new" notebook, although it was open on the shelf of the store- not
connected to internet though.
The freezing is debilitating-Cannot cancel or close the window.
The only way I can move again is to restart.
I am about to take off the Norton security software (looks like it doesnt
work anyway!) and try another security program and see if that makes a
difference.
I have twice run a "free"program from Smart PC and both times (within 2
days) it revealed 3 (6 in total ) instances of Trojan.-2 of which were IN the
Norton program!
The 1-2-3 spyware program also deleted several instances of spyware.
Defender & Norton were and are showing the computer as free of all viruses &
operating normally. Seems also that the Asus live update is not working

Have you tried to contact Asus? I tried on the number I had,but seems it is
disconnected!
My specs are 2Ghz T7200 Core 2 Duo proc, 2 Gb Ram & 120Gb HDD which is by
far the fastest specs I have had and so far,it is by far the worst performing!

Your specs are up to Vista okay so that shouldn't be a problem unless there
is a hardware fault on it (memory, motherboard or hard drive .. not much
left lol). Could you return it and get the store to take a look at it for
you? It might just need a reinstall and as you're unlikely to know its full
history that would be the route I would take first off.

If you can't get the store to look at it do you have a restore disc to take
the machine back to a factory state? If the machine was on the shelf it may
have been tinkered with by staff demo-ing it to customers. If you can
restore it I would do that and then remove any programs you don't want
before updating all drivers and imaging the OS and installing an AV program.
I used AVG which is free and so far I've had no trojans or viruses I ditched
Norton a long time ago and with free AV, Firewalls and Spyware applications
I don't see the need to pay for it. I'm also behind a NAT server and a
hardware firewall.

If you can't get to the store and you don't have a recovery disc I would
remove all software from the machine and get rid of the trojans, spyware and

I once had a client who got a virus and although the 'cleaning' apps they
used said it had been removed it kept coming back and I found that it
hadn't been removed fully. I used some instructions from Sophos to manually
remove all traces of it but I personally prefer to keep images of machines
so I can ghost them back and it's a lot faster than going through files and
the registry.

When you do get your machine clean and running okay don't go on-line before
you have an AV program installed and a firewall turned on :)
