After locking the computer,is there any way for somebody
to unlock it and gain access to it? I lock mine every
nite before going to bed. However, every now and then I
find that my kids have gained access to the internet.I do
not want to tip them off that I know they are using the
computer, but how in the hell they can get in if I`m
locking up the computer with a password. No,they don`t
know it `cause I don`t discuss this or have mentioned it
to any family member. They are not computer savvy
either, they have asked me before how to print
things...Can anyone tell me how they are getting around
my password protected protection?

If they have an Administrator-level account on the
computer, they can unlock it with their own account.

They can also just turn the power off on the machine and
reboot it, and log in with whatever account they know.

If they somehow know your password, well, that would do
it too.

Nope, they don`t have an account.I`ve got WinXP and the
only account available when they turn or reboot PC is
mine.

Reboot tapping F8 each second, select Safe Mode at the menu.
Select Administrator, leave password blank.
Do you get in?
If so, go to User Accounts in Control Panel, select Administrator and
password it.
Also change the password on your account, you should already be doing
it periodically if security is important to you.

Make sure that Guest is disabled, the
true "Administrator" has a password (see Jupiter's
message for how to add one), and that your kids didn't
install a keylogger or something like that :-)

There's myriad numbers of ways devious people can get
access if they have physical access to the machine.

Is your computer account only one on the system?

Double check! You can use this method. Start -> Run -> control
userpasswords2 and click OK. Check in list under "Users for this
computer..."

If you have ALL accounts password protected (strong passwords) and
they still get in, they are more computer literate than you give them
credit.
Unfortunately it does not take much of a tool to by pass the password
if they have physical access to the computer.
There is no security without physical security.
