When I turn on my computer a screen comes up asking if I want to start in
safe mode or normally and then just shuts down and reboots again. Please
help - I know I have a virus, just not sure how to remove.

First of all, have you got an anti virus program? If so run it, if not
get one of the many free ones available, but I personally recommend
NOD32. Also you might want to get a decent spyware/malware program and
run that. Again a good spyware program is Spybot S&D.

In order to troubleshoot further - I would need to know how you *know* you
have a virus?

Start in safe mode and runna scan or Restore the system to an earlier date.

Make sure you have an up2date security software to scan your machine.

What is the computer make and model. What exactly do you have by way of
a Windows XP CD?

Are you seeing a Stop Error Report? If yes what does it say?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

What is the position regarding data on the disk? Did you have a backup
or is it necessary to recover data?

Hope this helps.
