Hi all, I am baffled here. I was in the middle of running a program (making a character on Everquest 2 startup disk) and my computer just shut down, as if someone just unplugged it or something. When looking at the motherboard there is a green light on so I would think it is getting power but I can not power up the computer at all. Could it be a bad powersource, it is a 350w powersource...too little juice??? Is my motherboard fried? My friend who just moved out of state built this computer for me about 3 months ago, ran great until today.I am running a pentium 4 2.8 gig on an asus motherboard, windows xp pro. Any help would be greatly appriciated before I take my desktop to a computer store, basic things I could try myself to diagnose the problem. Thanks all. - Chad

sounds as if it could be the PSU - same thing happened to my sisters computer.

Not 100% though, sorry, though PSU would be my bet.

I'd say 350w is plenty, but i bet the fuse in your PSU has blown or the PSU is just dead. I was runnning a 250w PSU in my comp that was 2.8Ghz, 2 sticks ddr, 2 cd drives, FX5200 and a hard drive and it ran perfectly :/ .

Just try another 350w PSU or higher if you can. Good luck!

you can test it with a multimeter but theres no point, i'd put my money on it's being dead. Get a generic 430w supply from somewhere like Aria (their ones are good)...

should sort you out.

C

That would be my first suggestion also ... a green light on the MB means you have power to the board, but, I have seen a PSU fail and still give enough power to the board but not run.

Are any fans running?

same as what happened to my sister - green LED was on but nothing would happen when you pressed power button.

Replaced PSU and it worked fine.

Thank you all for the replies, I am going to go buy a new power supply right now, I think I am going to buy something more then 350 as I want to get a new video card soon and I think it might need the juice...There arent any dangers to getting a biger power supply is there? Thanks again all.

i dont belive there are any danger in getting a PSU that is higher than what you had.

Well, I just got a 400w PSU and my computer is now working again. Thanks a ton. - Chad

We'er glad you got it sorted. :thumb:

As a wee note Coops, I have found, in my nearly 20years dealing with computers, that the PSU has the biggest failure rate than any other component in a PC. :D

Wow the PSU really does give out the most often? I guess that makes sense.

If you need data recovery, then just use our DR services at www.disklabs.com.

We will sort out special rates for users of this site.

Thanks,

How much is a special rate? and anyway, why? you have only been here 1 day...
