computer jammed (crashed?)

On a website I clicked a link and my computer jammed. I could get no reponse
and the only thing moving was the hour glass figure. The yellow light at the
bottom of the computer was on. I tried ctl, alt, delete but nothing happened.
I waited for about 10 minutes and the yellow light was still on. I pressed
restart but then a message came on saying I should insert bootup disc and
reboot computer. I found a recovery disc(bootup disc?) but it came back with
a message that I needed a diagnostic check with another disc. The computer
then rebooted itself but after a short time it asked to be rebooted again. I
was going round in circles. I had to turn the computer off at the main and
unplugged the internet pin from the wall. I waited and when I turned the
computer on again everything was working.

How can I deal with this problem again, I do not like having to turn the
computer off at the main it might cause damage to the hard drive?

Anybody any thoughts?

Max, what website and link did you click on? It may be coincidential. Be
aware of any unusual activity on your computer
because you may have picked up a virus. Otherwise that type of behavior
could be caused by hardware or software.

It was just a chess site. There has been no unusual activity apart from that
already mentioned. I have zone alarm pro virus checker and firewall. It seems
to be working fine now, perhaps its just a one off.
I tried a norton register scanner and it found 7 faults which it could not
repair.
but perhaps this has nothing to do with the crash.
I think it may be ok now.
Thanks
