You can try with restoring to a previous system restore point. If that
doesn't work, then I'll suggest you to reinstall the computer. :-)

Maybe it has something to do with your clock?! You are in Calgary, and the
zone appears to be right, but you're a day ahead of everyone else! You also
need to learn how to crosspost properly. You should cross post to two or
three pertinent groups at the most, not every group that happens to have
Windows XP in its subject should be crossposted to!

System Restore will only go back one week & it will not reset.
Thanks for info on clock don't know why that happened. Will try to watch the
number of posts I didn't know I was doing too many, I am still new to
newsgroups.
Would doing updates help? My BIOS cannot be upgraded, but maybe chipsets and
what ever other drivers need it?
Any idea how i can get into BIOS or CMOS setup for Windows XP Pro which used
to be XP Home and originally Windows 98.
That's it I will shut up now.

Bruce, if you can't do a system restore, you might be out of luck. But,
before doing a reinstallation, try doing a repair install. It doesn't help
very often, but sometimes it will fix the sort of problems you are
experiencing - and you won't have to reinstall all of the other software.
An attempt is almost certainly worth the time and effort.

That's a Norton Antivirus file. Try reinstalling NAV,

That shouldn't be required -- it's just a template. And the normal template
is normal.dot, which also isn't required, it will recreate itself when
needed. What's the beginning of that path?

message pop up?

Have you done a virus check using CURRENT virus definitions? Have you
checked for spyware? Have you gone to the Windows update site and downloaded
the critical updates? I'm betting it's a case of viruses and/or spyware
running rampant.

First thing and most important: Set your system clock !!
 
Most everyone else has you covered. First, with regard to updates, usually
that refers to device drivers, you visit the device manufacturer's websites
for those or application updates, the same, visit the website of the
application maker.

The instructions for a repair install are as follows:
NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive and you have an
actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, boot with the XP
CD in the drive and perform a repair install as outlined below. If the
system isn't set to boot from the CD or you are not sure, you need to enter
the system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter set press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

When the system boots, a few screens into the process you may see a message
instructing you
to hit any key in order to boot from the CD along with a countdown. When
you see this be sure to
hit a key on the keyboard, if you miss this instruction and the system fails
to boot from the CD, it's too
late, you'll need to reboot and try again.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console. ***The selection you want at this screen is
"Setup Windows,"
NOT "Repair Windows Installation.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

If you only have a recovery CD, your options are quite limited. You can
either purchase a retail version of XP which will allow you to perform the
above
among other tools and options it has or you can run your system recovery
routine with the Recovery CD which will likely wipe your drive, deleting all
files but will restore your setup to factory fresh condition.

Your system BIOS isn't likely to be the cause of any of the issues you
described. Generally, a BIOS only needs updating if you are having some
hardware compatibility issue that cannot be resolved with driver updates and
then, only if an update addresses the issue or sometimes to add additional
features not currently supported by your motherboard, sometimes such
additional features are found in BIOS updates.

To answer the question about how to enter the BIOS, this varies depending
upon system, however, when your system boots, usually the first screen,
though sometimes a later screen, contains a message to hit a specified key
in order to enter setup, hitting the specified key gets you into the BIOS.
 
Just a thought. Do you have your operating system on a logical drive by
itself. If so, you might not have to reinstall all your programs only the
start menu and icons.

If you decide to do a complete XP install I suggest you first copy your
windows/system and windows/system32 file to an off drive location. That way
you can run your programs and copy back the missing DLL files.

Whatever you do collect all your data files off computer so that you don't
lose all that. You should be doing that on a regular basis anyway.

Computers are not human and sometime I wonder if computer users are not
either.

Omg..did you speak to those Symantec people too?

I had the same thing happen..I had to have my entire pc restored. You need
to take out all connections (printer, cable modem, etc.) and then restore.
