I like to know that whether it is OK to transport a computer as check-
in baggage in the airplane. I know it is very cold down in the
baggage cabin. Will the freezing temperature damage the hardware or
software?

Thanks for information.

The bigger question would be do you want the baggage handlers throwing
around your box. Personally, I'd rather keep it with me than to trust them
to be gentle with it. As far as freezing temperatures, I don't expect the
temperatures in the baggage cabin to be an issue if it is stored in a
somewhat insulated case. It would be different if you attached it to the
outside skin of the plane!

The electrostatic charge on the skin of the aircraft is probably even more
hazardous than baggage handlers.

yes, but some airlines may restrict use or at least require
you disable wifi if present.

No it shouldn't be that cold, though I suppose if your
laptop were poorly designed then an extreme temp change
could cause different coefficients of expansion to cause a
problem, but the laptop should be engineered to account for
this to some extent since it does also change state from off
to warm or hot when running.

To avoid mishandling or theft it is better to carry-on with
you even if you won't use it.

If the airline is able to carry pets in the baggage compartment, then
temperature is not a problem.

It's much much better if you keep it with yourself. This is what I've
done lately in a trip to Rome.

When I used to travel alot for work I always kept my laptop with me as
hand-luggage. If my luggage ever got lost then that was bad but if my laptop
got lost that would have been a disaster.

Do you mean a laptop or do you mean a computer, i.e. desktop? If its a
desktop you will probably find its too bulky to sensibly be hand luggage.

Only 1 point to add to the replies above. If your laptop is freezing cold
when you get it back, then make sure you warm it up properly before turning
it on - condensation would cause serious trouble if present when you allowed
the power to flow! Maybe remove the battery while it is in the hold, just to
be extra careful.

you hav to warm it thru _then_ give it time to dry off.
