computer hangs wont reboot

i'm using xp home ed and several times now the computer
just hung up (no movement) and doesnt respond to contol-
alt-del. the on/off key wont go off neither (permanently
on). the onlty way i got to restart was to drain the
battery - obviously wasting a lot of time. where is the
problem?
 
When you tried to turn your computer off, did you hold
the on/off key dowm for more than 8 seconds? You may
have to do that to turn it off when you problem occurs.
