Computer hangs when running a movie

I'm running win2000, and when I run movies the computer hangs
completely after a couple of seconds. (I tried couple of codecs). The
problem is new.
I suspect my awful video card Geforce 4. But how do I know if it's a
hardware problem, drivers (I'm using Nvidia newest) or maybe it's
related to ACPI - interrrupt collision?

Is there a program which tests hardware problems?

Try running gspot on the avi file to make sure you have the right codecs
installed.
 
Every responsible hardware manufacturer provided
comprehensive diagnostics for their product. A comprehensive
diagnostic for Geforce should be on their web site.

Other hardware diagnostics to consider include a memory
diagnostic which should be provided in the comprehensive
diagnostics provided by the computer manufacturer. If not,
then search for third party memory diagnostics such as
Memtst86 or Docmem. Diagnostics test hardware without
complications of Windows and drivers. If the hardware tests OK
even when heated with a hair dryer on high (yes that hot is
pigs heaven to all but defective hardware), then move on to
software suspects.

It's no gamer's card but should play videos fine.
If it were card related it might be more of a driver issue,
try a newer detonator driver from http://www.nvidia.com and
if you dont' have directx 9c installed yet, do so.

What has changed recently?
Do your other videos hang too, ones that used to play ok?
The suggestion sleepy made is a good one, get Gspot and see
what codec it's using. You might install/reinstall your
preferred codecs, depending on what it is (for audio as well
as video).

I have a similar problem, but it happens only with some
startups. Once the problem is cleared, it will stay that way
until some future startup. The only way to unfreeze the PC
is to cut the power and restart. I have Norton AV 2003
installed, and I run WinXP Pro/SP2. The problem started
sometime after installing a new Samsung CD/DVD drive,
but it was also about the time that I installed SP2 and
renewed Norton AV. It's an annoyance, and it makes me
leave the PC powered up if it's in one of those good modes.
My standard test is to run a short video clip (.wmv file) on
Windows Media Player. If it's in a freezing mode, it will freeze
just as loading is complete and it's time to start executing
the .wmv file. If it's in a freezing mode, the PC will also
freeze on Visual Studio.NET just as the designer form is
to be displayed. Does any of this sound like your system?
