W98 is a relatively simple DOS-based system and will work fairly well on
a configuration such as you describe.
W2k is a much more complex system, with many more processes active at
any time. The PC config you describe is one that will barely support the
memory and chip-speed requirements of W2k, although W2k should run -
albeit slowly.
There are some things you can check:
- make sure the pagefile size is adequate.
- make sure the disk partition(s) are not completely full.
- make sure the disk partition(s) are not badly fragmented.
- run CHKDSK against the disk partition(s) to make sure the file
structures are error-free.
- free up some space by deleting temp files. See some of Dave
Patrick's recent posts for suggestions. Be careful doing this.
- On a box such as yours it will help W2k performance to have the
pagefile on a second hard drive attached to a second motherboard
controller. Such a drive need not be expensive; a used 5-10GB drive
should be sufficient...depending on your short- and long-range
intentions for using this machine. This will also solve the problem if
you find that your existing partition(s) are more than 80% or so filled
and/or heavily fragmented.
