Hello

I have a friend with a computer (XP Pro., 768 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD - 90%
full, 1.5 GHz processor) that regularly freezes up (for a couple of
minutes at a time) after about 10-15 minutes and it doesn't always
start up properly - it says he must restart the computer to proceed.

The strange thing is that I have had the computer at my place and it
hasn't frozen when I have had it on for a couple of hours at a time.
The only difference in the locations is that he has it plugged into a
powerboard which in turn is plugged into another powerboard which
connects to the mains. I don't know if that matters.

I know it is a vague question but I am wondering if any one might have
any ideas as to why it freezes?

Thank you for any comments.

Absolutely the power source matters. Your friend should plug the
computer directly into the wall socket or into a real Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) instead of a "powerboard".

Also, your friend needs to immediately get some more free space on his
hard drive. This can be done by copying data to an external drive and
then deleting from the hard drive, uninstalling programs that aren't
needed any more, and by doing maintenance.

Power supply should make AC power irrelevant. A power supply must
include numerous functions that maintain power output when input has
no power for specific short periods, when AC electric dims so low that
light bulbs are at 40% intensity, and even provide surge protection.

Did that power supply come with a long list (a full page or more) of
written specification numbers? Manufacturers must forget to provide
specs when other essential functions were also forgotten.

A power supply working in one place says little. It must work just
fine in all places. It must start and work just fine even when AC
lights are 40% dim. It must not be damaged when all outputs are
shorted together. And if it fails, it also must have circuits so that
nothing inside a computer is damaged. Functions often missing when
selling to computer assemblers who only know dollars and watts.

To learn why, two minutes with a 3.5 digit multimeter is essential.
A tool even sold in K-mart for $20 (because Ipods are much more
complex). Should you want to know why it fails, then post numbers
taken with this procedure "When your computer dies without
warning....." starting 6 Feb 2007 in the newsgroup alt.windows-xp

Otherwise, blame a human for only maybe buying a crappy power
supply.
