Computer freezing and locking up

I have been having an issue with my computer completely locking down.
Meaning, in the middle of working...using ANY program from Internet (AOL) to
just a program on the computer it will lock up completely. There will be no
response when touching mouse, keyboard or hitting ctl, alt, delete. You have
to litterally unplug the computer from the power source to boot back up and
this keeps happening repeatedly. I have done everything I know to do
including a system restore to a previous date from 2 months ago. Does anyone
know of anything else I can do or have this problem. I have tons of ram in
here and I have just replaced the hard drive in June. Thanks so much for ANY
help or suggestions as this is getting to the point where I no longer even
want to turn on the computer.

Run some spyware and virus scans. Go to your Task Manager and see how many
processes you got running and their memory usage.

I have done the spyware and virus scan thing several times. The only thing
that has ever popped up was something on a cookie which i blocked and delted
immediately. I have went into the task manager and unchecked some of the
stuff AOL starts ie..their computer check up and spyzapper to not start upon
start up. This does not freeze up right at start up. I can log on and then
start working and soon afterwards I have a complete lock up on the computer.

As a general rule, you should leave them all alone. Almost everyone has a
lot running; that's normal and not a problem. Fooling around with this is
unlikely to solve your problems, but is very likely to get you into more
difficulty.

i have ran adwadre and all that
stuff

"All that stuff"? Please, when you're looking for help, you need to be very
specific.

and puter still runs slowly and freezes up help....

How slowly? How long has it been doing this. How long has it been freezing?
How often does it freeze?

In the absence of more specific information, my guess is that you are
infested with malware, despite your having run "all that stuff."

Ken Blake,

I have a Dell desktop that started to freeze up today after installation of
Fix-it Utilities 7 Professional by Avanquest. I ran all the systems checks,
windows update, anti virus and spyware check. The Quick Status shows that the
system health is excellent and the system protection health excellent also.
When I went to reboot the system the desktop loads very slow. When I click
on a program the program starts to load and then freezes..no mouse, pointer
nothing. I need to manually turn off and on the computer by the switch. It
seems that the computer will freeze when any software is opened. How does one
attempt to get past this and get into system restore or recycle bin? I have
Windows XP Troubleshoot guide but can't seem to find the answer in the book.
Bye the way. I have installed the fix-it untilities into 3 computers running
XP and have had no problems until now. I would appreciater any help or advice
that you can give.

This is just a suggestion.

If the system runs much better in Safe Mode, then you have determined it is
not one of the "core" (essential) files or programs that is misbehaving /
damaged.

You would need to call Avanquest technical support or uninstall the software
from Safe Mode. It is difficult to know what "Fix-It Utilities" is doing
"behind the scenes" without being intimately familiar with the software, or
knowing what types of activities the computer was doing "normally" before
you added it (e.g. some in-depth examination of the system would be
required).

I always heard some of these type of "system utilities" are best installed
on brand new systems just out of the box. The apparent reason for this is
they "snapshot" (image) the system in its current state in order to track
changes and report them or fix them later on. So if you install a 'system
fix it' utility on a computer already having "many miles on it" it is
possible the system was about ready to bite the dust anyway. So the
addition of this utility so late in the game MIGHT have increased the
running tasks beyond the "breaking point" or some type of program / resource
conflict (.exe, .dll or service) may have developed.

Regards.

I have been having the same problem with Windows XP MCE. I have not yet
corrected it, but believe it is due to either a software program (likely
running at startup) or the nvidia video card driver (which is more unlikely
as it has not caused this problem early on).

Hi Barry,

When it locks up and the mouses stops moving, it becomes a Memory
problem, nothing more. One of your Memory Sticks, is going bad. From
experience.

As the computer memory sticks gets old and you have different brands of
Memory installed, it starts freezing up, and you get no error messages at
all.

Remember a Memory Stick can pass tests, but still be bad. Note, exactly
how long it takes for it to make one pass, then do two more passes and see
if it takes longer to complete. If it takes exactly the same amount of time,
then the Memory Stick is good, test the other sticks you have.
