Hi, hope somebody can give me a hand. I have an Intel P4 1.8 with 512M of
memory, an Ati 8500DV all in wonder, and a 120G hard drive. I am running XP
home. I use Adobe Premiere to digitally edit videos. I wanted to burn DVD's
so I installed a DVD burner. Due to physical limitations I had to install
the new DVD burner in place of the old CD burner. That put both DVD's (new
burner and existing DVDrom) on the secondary Ide cable. Included software
was Nero express, nero vision express, mysonic dvd, InCd, and WinDVD. XP
recognized the new burner and it played a DVD right away. Everything seemed
ok. Then my daughter was on the internet and the computer froze up. Only the
reboot button could get me going again. It started freezing more and more
frequently. I used task manager to see what was going on. Memory is not
being taxed. The cpu however goes to 100% and stays up around there before
it freezes. Whenever I try to convert an avi file to mpeg2 it causes the
computer to freeze. That has become my test. I ran device manager and
everything seems to be ok. I've used regcleaner to clean up orphaned files
etc. I've removed the new burner and put the old cd burner back, removed the
included software (through the add/remove programs), and used restore points
but it still freezes unexpectedly. When I tried to defrag it kept freezing
but I finally got it to go all the way through. When it freezes and I reboot
a few times it won't even reboot all the way without freezing. After a while
when I come back it'll start up ok. I've used event viewer and seen some
errors that don't seem related (service control manager, true vector
engine - part of zone alarm)but I'm not real familiar with event viewer. I
know this is long but I know anyone that can help will need most of this
info. Well, any suggestions?
