Since installing windows xp my cursor is constantly
freezing. Then the computer has to be shut off and
restarted. I can get online help from one of the
professionals on line, but it cost me $25 each time. I am
about to go broke paying them. The fix they do only slows
the problem down for a couple of weeks, then it isn't
uncommon for the computer to freeze three or four times
an hour.

Any help I can get for this problem will be greately
appreciated.

Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your video card,
search for Windows XP drivers, download and install them. Once
this is accomplished, the Standby button will become enabled.

If you have a notebook PC, then visit the notebook manufacturer's
support website and download the Windows XP video adapter drivers.

If the freezing problem persists, its very likely your video card/adapter
is defective and should be replaced.

Hi

Has all your hardware got the latest drivers versions that are XP compatible?

I had a smiliar problem when i put my first xp machine
together, turned out it was the video card stalling and
freezing the display. it was stopping due to overheating
which turned out to be a defect on the card which was
replaced under warrranty. Check the gfx card is seated
properly into the slot and you have the latest drivers.
Uninstall already used drivers before putting the new ones
in as simply overwriting with new ones can sometimes cause
problems. If you have a good game or graphic intensive app
you might try running that and seeing if it freezes more
often as the gfx card gets used a lot more.

You are not the one I have the same problem and I found
out that it's explorer.exe eating all the memory. Some
time it comes back and some time it just goes on and on
till the computer is dead.A possible memory leak in the
process.
Result of bad engineering :(
I also don't know where to go.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but I have seen advanced power
management in the BIOS settings cause lockups. Also make sure power
mgmt is turned off in Display properties in windows along with
hibernate as I have seen these cause this too. I would upgrade Directx
and video drivers as well. And like someone said, re-seat the video
card too.
As has been mentioned, I would also tend to lean toward hardware
issues. I have seen one PC that had a similar problem when I installed
XP Pro on it. I had to change video cards and had to update the Video
bridge(i think). His XP machine would lock up at all different events
until I did this. Now it works fine.
I also have noticed that XP can be picky about memory when installing
certain updates, maybe your memory chip(s)are faulty , but you did not
notice any problems until you got XP. (This one is probably a very,
very long shot).
