Computer freezes when saving documents

The computer at our church office (running Windows XP Professional) freezes when
anyone attempts to save a Word document (Word 2000). They've tried reinstalling
several times. Why is this happening?

Well, it's possible. I just assumed that they knew what they were doing. Since
you mentioned it, would re-installing without uninstalling cause the problem?

It could. I've often used the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea" when
talking about re-installing software without uninstalling first to eliminate
a problem. It could just bury the problem deeper. Plus you could end up with
multiple copies of a file in different directories, etc. The mind just
boggles at what could happen!

I will ask them about the uninstalling, but is there anything else that it might

I was reading something about deleting the normal.dot file, and also something
about deleting the "data" folder found in the registry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word. What do you think of
these ideas?

It could. I've often used the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea" when
talking about re-installing software without uninstalling first to eliminate
a problem. It could just bury the problem deeper. Plus you could end up with
multiple copies of a file in different directories, etc. The mind just
boggles at what could happen!

I think that anyone who doesn't know much about computers should keep their
fingers out of the registry. (That sounds harsh but it's so easy to screw
your system up if you delete the wrong things.)

It depends on what you mean by "reinstalling." When you go to Add/Remove
Programs and choose Change, you can add or remove components without
reinstalling. And in fact, if you just insert the CD and let it autorun, I
believe you will accomplish the same thing unless you change the install
location.
